Mission
Momenta Art is an artist-run charitable institution that works to promote
emerging and underrepresented artists. We seek to expand the dialogue
of art by showing work that is not well represented in commercial
galleries because of its form or content. We promote artists of all
ages, races, and ethnicities. In particular, we promote work that
explores the nature of aesthetic experience balanced with social
engagement.
Funding
Momenta Art is supported by the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Brooklyn
Borough President Marty Markowitz, The Greenwall Foundation, The
Greenwich Collection, Ltd., The Jerome Foundation, The National Endowment
for the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York
Foundation on the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA),
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation,
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and individual contributors.
History
Momenta
Art was originally established in Philadelphia in 1986 by Eric Heist,
Donna Czapiga and James Mills. From 1986 to 1991 they operated a permanent
exhibition space in Philadelphia which presented the work of approximately
250 artists. In 1992, under the direction of Eric Heist and Laura Parnes,
Momenta Art relocated to New York City, functioning during this transitional
phase as a migratory gallery while presenting exhibitions in a variety
of temporary venues in Manhattan. In March of 1995 Momenta Art reopened
in a permanent exhibition space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Exhibitions
and Projects
For each exhibition the gallery publishes a newsletter that includes information
about the artists and their works. The newsletter also includes a map
indicating other art spaces in the area and additional information for
those unfamiliar with the vibrant art scene in Williamsburg.
In an effort to provide opportunities to emerging artists to create public
works of art, we have co-curated exhibitions for the Brooklyn Museum,
Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Public Library's Lobby Gallery
and in the exhibition space within the Grand Army Plaza monument.
Momenta Art's annual fundraiser optimizes the presentation of the work
as it also functions as a group exhibition. Works are displayed at the
Momenta space for two weeks and then transported to larger exhibition
venue for a one day exhibition and raffle. In 1996 Ronald Feldman Fine
Arts in Manhattan hosted our benefit; followed by White Columns in 1997,
1999 through 2007, and Green Naftali Gallery in 1998.
Momenta
has organized international exchange exhibitions to foster exposure
of international emerging artists from Uruguay, France and Thailand.
In
addition to exhibitions in the gallery's two project rooms, we have
presented the works of gallery artists at such prominent art fairs
including the Gramercy Art Fair and NADA Art Fair in Miami. These
exhibitions provide an opportunity to emerging artists to participate
in art fairs while broadening the audience of the gallery.
Momenta Art has published inexpensive, limited edition
sets of artists multiples which combine the works of emerging and established
artists. These multiples serve as traveling mini-exhibitions while encouraging
the collection of works by emerging artists and they have been acquired
by the Museum of Modern Art library and other art institutions.
Momenta also publishes catalogs providing documentation of past exhibitions.
